New MP3 player requires no computer

MP3 Player News

A portable MP3 player is much more convenient than a portable CD player for carrying around your favorite tunes. But for most MP3 players you need a computer to load your music into the player’s memory.

The RCA Rip & Go Digital Music Studio takes the computer out of the MP3 equation. The 160-watt bookshelf stereo system has a five-disc CD player and an AM-FM radio tuner plus a detachable MP3 player on top.

With the touch of a button, the MP3 player can record radio broadcasts for replay later or copy tunes as they play on the CD player. Once the recordings are made, the user disconnects the MP3 player from the system, plugs in a pair of earbuds and is ready to take music on the road.

I tested a Rip & Go, and as a bookshelf stereo it provides rich, powerful sound. The portable MP3 player also sounds great. And though creating recordings on the MP3 player is not as smooth and quick as doing the same things on a computer, the Rip & Go might be a good option for someone who doesn’t have a computer.

The Rip & Go was very easy to set up. Connecting the speakers and antennas and loading AAA batteries into the remote control and the MP3 player took only about 10 minutes. The unit has a good FM tuner, and it did a very nice job of scanning for available FM stations and automatically assigning them to spots in its station preset system.

The CD player was also easy to use. The CD compartment has five slots for music discs, and it’s set up so the user can load or change the four idle CDs while one CD is playing. The unit will play commercially-purchased CDs as well as CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 and Windows Media (WMA) discs.

Apple iPod Photo

MP3 Player News

The Apple iPod Photo – is a HDD MP3 player. It runs on rechargeable batteries and support AAC, AIFF, Audible, MP3, WAV files. Learn more about the Apple iPod 60GB from the following Apple press releasing announcing it. IPod Photo comes in two sizes: 40GB version, which costs $499–$100 more than the plain vanilla 40GB IPod. There’s also a 60GB version of the IPod Photo, which sells for a wallet-emptying $599.

Apple iPod Photo Reviews

PCMag reviews the Apple iPod Photo and writes – ‘Apple retains the iPod’s famous ease of use and applies it well to digital photos, but with some odd limitations. If you want primarily a music player with the added ability to see and show photos, too, you’ll be thrilled. But digital photographers will wish for more on-the-road-friendly features.’

CNET Reviews the Apple iPod Photo MP3 player and gives it a ‘Excellent’ rating. They write – ‘Though it no longer comes with such extras as a dock or an A/V cable, the photo-enabled iPod (nee iPod Photo) is, pound for pound, the best iPod available.

Intuitive photo viewing; displays album art; adds color to your iPod experience; mammoth 30GB or 60GB hard drive; lets you view photos and listen to music simultaneously; speedy performance; latest firmware update along with optional Camera Connector will allow direct digital-camera transfers of photos, which will be viewable on iPod; solid battery life. Nice, big headphones; iPod Camera Connector; digital camera; latest firmware update that allows digital photo transfer; iPhoto 4.x; A/V cable; dock; better carrying case.’

PCWorld reviews the Apple iPod Photo and writes – ‘Although you pay a premium for the IPod Photo, you also score on the accessory front. Not only are the AV cable and Apple’s traditional earbuds included, but so are a carrying case and dock. On the downside, you’ll have to purchase an add-on if you want to move pictures directly from a digital camera onto the IPod Photo. And even if you do that, you won’t be able to view photos that come straight from a digicam–you need to load them on your computer before you can look at them on the IPod Photo. That’s pretty annoying.

Despite such minor flaws and the high price, the IPod Photo won me over with its gorgeous color screen and its ability to seamlessly load both photos and music from my PC. Now instead of suffering through 40 minutes on the stair climber staring at the calorie counter, I can enjoy my favorite pictures.’

Apple iPod Photo Press Release

From the Manufacturer

A delight for the ears. A feast for the eyes. Though it’s no bigger than a pack of playing cards and weighs in at just over 6 ounces, iPod photo delivers a one-two sensory punch, letting you carry an entire library of your favorite music (up to 15,000 songs) or enough photos (as many as 25,000) to fill nearly 200 slide trays or cover nearly 5,000 square feet of wall space. Got a really big den?

iPod photo displays 25 full-color thumbnails at a time, which you can scroll through the same way you scroll through song titles.
The new iPod photo features a razor-sharp LCD display that lets you see your photos in vivid color–65,536 colors, to be exact. And with its built-in backlighting, you’ll be able to admire those photos indoors or out.

Like its famous siblings, iPod photo features the touch-sensitive Apple Click Wheel that’s the envy of the industry. You’ll use it to navigate iPod photo’s new menu. Now in living color, it’s easier to read than ever. That’s thanks in part to the clarity of the display–it offers a resolution of 220 by 176 pixels–and in part to the new Myriad typeface. Spin the wheel to Music, and you can scroll effortlessly through dozens of playlists, hundreds of albums, or thousand of songs.

Or highlight photos. iPod photo displays 25 full-color thumbnails at a time. And you can scroll through them the same way you scroll through song titles–quickly. Just spin the wheel to see more. And when you see a photo you’d like displayed all by its lonesome, just click the center button and voila! No one will have to say “cheese” as long as you have iPod photo around. Whether you’re listening to tunes or checking out photos, you’re sure to be all smiles.

If you’d like everyone else to smile right along with you, iPod Photo makes it easy. Sure, you could let them take the Click Wheel for a spin themselves, but here’s a way to get extra points for style. Use the included AV cable to connect iPod photo to a projector or TV. You can mesmerize friends and family with a glorious multimedia experience, offering them a breathtaking slideshow accompanied by the music you already have on your iPod photo. Of course, you get to choose the songs, albums, or playlists. And talk about smart–iPod photo optimizes your photos to fit on a standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) TV.

Wondering how you’re going to get all your digital photographs into iPod photo? iTunes 4.7. The new version lets you import your images directly into iPod photo from a folder on the hard drive of your Mac or PC. Spent time organizing your photos using iPhoto on a Mac or either Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 on a PC? iTunes 4.7 rewards your diligence by importing the albums you’ve created in iPhoto or the collections you’ve created in Album or Elements. You’ll be able to choose them from the Photos menu on iPod photo.

Wait, there’s more. iPod photo features even more robust autosync capabilities. Now, in addition to offering the industry’s best music syncing, iTunes offers stellar photo syncing as well. Update your photo collection by adding images or creating new albums, and the next time you connect iPod photo to your Mac or PC using the included FireWire or USB 2.0 cables, iTunes 4.7 will automatically synchronize your photo collection.

And did we mention that iTunes 4.7 also autosyncs album art? It’s true. The album art downloaded when you purchase music from the iTunes Music Store is transferred to iPod photo along with the music. So while iPod photo plays your tunes, you can enjoy the album art–in color, of course–on the Now Playing screen.

Creative Ships Worm With Zen mp3 Player

Creative

3700 Creative Zen Neeon mp3 players were shipped to Japan with the Wullik.b worm, a mass-mailed worm of 2003 vintage which makes copies of itself in random locations on machines it infects.

However, the worm won’t infect connected PCs unless the user browses the file system and clicks on the infected file. Also, anyone with up to date virus protection should be safe as, once plugged in, the PC would treat the Neon like a USB drive and scan it.

Creative is reporting that the worm affects players with serial numbers between 1230528000001 and 1230533001680 and is recalling those devices. Further shipments have been halted while the problem, which Creative describes as an ‘annoyance’ to customers is resolved
